A solid, strong, weather tight roof is fundamental to a house's primary purpose--providing shelter. And because the roof is often the largest,
most visible surface, it plays a key role in establishing the home's overall look.
From asphalt shingles to metal, there are lots of choices. Regardless of the product or type, all shingles or panels must overlap or interlock to
shed water effectively, and they must be durable and flexible enough to withstand severe weather and temperature fluctuations.
Of course, price is likely to be a major factor in your choice of a new roofing material. Our roofing contractors can work with you with your budget in
mind and recommend what is right for you.
Asphalt shingles are simple and inexpensive but offering little variety,
they have evolved significantly. They are now available in many styles, colors,
textures, and weights. Generally, the more you're willing to spend, the better the features and appearance and the greater the longevity.
Sawed into shingles or split into shakes, cedar, redwood, southern pine, and other woods were once ubiquitous on rooftops. Now they are
nearly always Western red cedar. They're typically laid over spaced board sheathing so that the underside of the shingles can breathe.
A material that's both beautiful and durable enough to last for centuries, real slate, unfortunately is extremely expensive. It's also very
heavy so it requires a beefy, engineer-approved roof shingles structure, which can add even more to the final tab. However, several slate alternatives
mimic the look at a fraction of the price. Plastic shingles are expected to last 40 years or more and cost less than half the price of slate.
In addition, they're much lighter, less than a tenth the weight of slate. Fiber cement shingles, come with a 50 year warranty and weigh half as much as slate.
Though gutters and downspouts can look a bit ungainly, they perform a vital role--helping to preserve a home by safely directing rainwater. Without
gutters, water raining directly from a roof causes splash back when it hits the ground, wetting the lower part of exterior walls or seeping down into the
base of the foundation.
